Statin Use Linked to Slight Increased Risk of Macular Degeneration
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jan 18 - A review of data from the Cardiovascular
Health Study suggests that statin use may slightly increase the risk of
age-related macular degeneration (AMD), investigators at the University of
Alabama at Birmingham suggest.

In the discussion section of their paper, Dr. McGwin's group notes that the
"atherosclerotic-like theory of AMD" argues that statins should be
protective. However, the researchers have previously found that cholesterol
levels were actually lower in patients with AMD than in those without, and
other groups have suggested that an atherogenic lipid profile may
paradoxically lower the risk of AMD.
