David,

see the Subject line of my post. That is precisely what it says.

"Lipitor did not prevent cardiovascular events or death in patients with type 2 diabetes receiving hemodialysis"

As in the past, I'll try once more and then stop since it's clearly not worth it.

Your subject line is from the article in ACP Journal Club and is correct. You, however wrote (and I left the thread below so you can clearly see this):

>Since this study finds Lipitor does not prevent cardiovascular events >or death in diabetic patients, why subject them to the adverse effects >of peripheral neuopathy when they are already at greater risk already?

Again, this is not what the study found. Leaving out that these were patients on hemodialysis (in the above sentence) completely distorts the finding of this study. The question you are asking above assumes something that is not true.

Statins cause peripheral neuropathy.

Diabetics have problems with peripheral neuropathy that can lead to amputation.

Since this study finds Lipitor does not prevent cardiovascular events or death in diabetic patients, why subject them to the adverse effects of peripheral neuopathy when they are already at greater risk already?

Where is the outcry? What has happened to medical ethics?

You are misunderstanding the study. It WAS NOT about the use of statins to prevent cardiovascular events or death in diabetic patients. Multiple studies have found that statins clearly do prevent both of these outcomes in diabetics.

The study found little evidence that statins prevent these outcomes in diabetics WHO ARE ON DIALYSIS. This is a tiny subset of people with diabetes.
