Re: Statins and side effects......

Precisely why Public Citizen and others petitioned the FDA in 2002 to have
statin labeling changed:

http://www.fda.gov/ohrms/dockets/dailys/02/May02/052902/02p-0244-cp00001-01-vol1.pdf

CITIZEN PETITION TO CHANGE THE LABELING FOR ALL STATIN DRUGS (MEVACOR,
LESCOL, PRAVACHOL, ZOCOR, LIPITOR, AND ADVICOR) RECOMMENDING USE OF
100-200mg PER DAY OF SUPPLEMENTAL CO-ENZYME QlO (INCLUDING CARDIOMYOPATHY
AND CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE). TO REDUCE THE RISK OF STATIN-INDUCED
MYOPATHIES

May 24,2002

Petitioner:

Dr. Julian M. Whitaker, M.D.

The undersigned requests that the Commissioner of Food and Drugs act
immediately to require that the labeling for all HMG Co-A reductase
inhibitors (statins)' include the following warning statement:

Warning: .

HMG CoA reductase inhibitors block the endogenous biosynthesis of an
essential co-factor , coenzyme Qlo, required for energy production. A
deficiency of coenzyme QlO is associated with impairment of myocardial
fbnction, with liver dysfunction and with myopathies (including
cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure). All patients taking HMG CoA
reductase inhibitors should therefore be advised to take 100 to 200 mg per
day of supplemental coenzyme Ql0.

I guess it's getting old by now with the millions of people taking
statins and 90% complaining of side effects and the number one
complaint is muscle problems. Now, I may be missing something here,
but if muscles are the problem, is not the heart a major muscle in the
body with intricate muscle fiber controlling the inner working parts
such as valves. I find it strange the number of heart murmurs
surfacing through out the country and a ho-hum attitude by the medical
field. I think there is a definite connection between statins, heart
murmurs, and other related heart problems.
