Re: Niacin

It seems to me I heard somewhere that Mel Smith wrote in article

My doctor told me to try niacin as a possible chloresterol reducer.
I know that there are several formulations of niacin available and I asked
my doctor if it made a difference.
He said it made no difference just buy one and take 2 grams daily.
Is there a preferred formulation of niacin

*My* doctor says the formulation *does* make a difference.

He (my doc) changed me from a 'no-flush' instantaneous niacin to a
'controlled-release' niacin. He also instructed me to take a 500mg gram
capsule daily to start. I hope to move up to 1000mg daily shortly.

The niacin I use can be purchased at Costco (cheapest) or Walgreen's
(slightly more expensive). The product is SLO-NIACIN (500mg) for $7.89 for
100 500mg tablets. I take one capsule at supper each day (maybe I should
take more ??).

The manufacturer is: Upsher-Smith Laboratories, Inc. Minneapolis, MN
55447. The BarCode Number is: 3 0245-0063-11 7

My first cardiologist, whom I trusted much more than some I've come
across since, started me on 1000mg of Slo-Niacin, and the cardios who
followed him kept me there until recently, when the current guy reduced
it to 500mg on the basis of my stable testing. ISTM 2000mg is a pretty
heavy dose; is your doctor a cardiologist or in a different specialty?
IIUC Niacin can affect the liver under some circumstances.
