Looks like I am caught between a rock and a hard place.
I am at high risk for stroke and/or CV problems so my doctor correctly wants
my BP reduced from my normal 150-160 range and he also wants me in mild
bradycardia. So the medications prescribed are the beta blocker Toprol XL 25
mg and the ACE inhibitor Enalapril 2-1/2 mg plus the alpha blocker Hytrin 5
mg (does double duty).
Now systolic is 110-130, diastolic 60-65 and pulse around 60. That's great
except for the low diastolic.
There are several studies linking extremely low diastolic with increased
risk of dementia and Alzheimer disease. [Circulation 2000;102:1079 &
Archives of Neurology Vol 60 No 2, February 2003]. The studies define
extremely low diastolic as less than 65. In my age bracket the absolute risk
of dementia is high and the adjusted relative risk of an extremely low
diastolic is 1.7 with 95% CI. So it's worrisome...
I will see my doctor in a couple of weeks and kick it around with him. In
the meantime are there any suggestions for ways to reduce systolic without
also reducing diastolic? The only medicine I heard of that might work is
oral nitrate, which is not widely used for BP control.
My diet is already pretty good as I don't consume fat because my gall
bladder was removed. I also minimize meat to keep cholesterol under
control. Basically a yoghurt, fish, pasta and veggies diet.
Being switched from the beta-blocker to more ace-inhibitor might reduce
the difference between systolic and diastolic pressures.
Will be available to "glow" and chat about this and other things like
cardiology, diabetes, Bird Flu, the Lamb's opening of the 6th seal (Rev.
6:12), cooking and nutrition that interest those following this thread
here during the next on-line chat(05/11/06) from 5 to 6 pm EST, LORD

Would switching from the beta blocker to more ace inhibitor reduce the
difference between systolic and diastolic by reducing systolic or by
increasing diastolic? I am looking to raise my diastolic pressure from
the sixties to the seventies.
Thanks
