BP Went Down But Pulse Went Up?

My mother is 82 and takes Micardis (80 mg./day) and Norvasc (5mg/day).
Her BP has been poorly controlled, usually with systolic in the 140-160
range but her diastolic is usually low (around 60). Also, her pulse
would be low, in the 50-60 range). This has gone on for years with this
regiment.
However, this all seemed to changed overnight during the summer: Her
systolic went down to 120-130 range and diastolic came up a little to
the 70s. In addition, her pulse went up to the 70-85 range. I had her
call her doctor (internist) when this occurred, but he was just
thinking in terms of the numbers being in the range and said it was Ok
as long as pulse was below 90. He didn't seem to "get" that a sudden
change had occurred. Maybe I am wrong, but to me, even though the pulse
might be in the normal range, it seems odd that overnigt it would go
from being quite low to the higher end. That with the BP just makes me
think there may be something going on here.
Is this type of change a red flag for anything?
THe only other thing I can think of is that she has a low sodium
problem (her labs show it below normal range) and the doctor was having
her eat more salt. However, earlier in the year her BP was going up
even more (because of stress it seemed) and so he said to cut back on
the salt. That is the only change I can think of. Her only other
condition is hypothyroidism and she takes synthroid for that, but no
dose changes.
Any ideas or suggestions?
She is going to have a scheduled exam with her doctor this week. I
would like to know as much about opinions on this before then so I can
have her ask him (he thinks her systolic at 150 is a great achievement
so I think he will just look at numbers and think all is great without
getting that this all happened suddenly). He also irritates me because
he wont do an EKG unless she has chest pain (she hasn't had one in 6
years).
Thanks in advance for any input, especially on whether you think I
should be worried about the pulse change.
