In general every risk factor is multiplicative (the risks do not just
add up they are multiplied). In general high blood pressure is bad
because it stresses the endothelium lining artery walls allowing LDL to
infiltrate and initiate plaque build up. It also predisposes you to a
host of other problems and attacks many other organs. Whether it is
important or not depends on all your other risk factors and your body in
particular. To give you an example driving on bald tires may be OK on
dry road but will be very dangerous if it rains, and would be even worse
if you had lousy brakes.

Buy a home machine for checking blood pressure and keep records. Measure
only after being still for 15 minutes and with the arm in the correct
position. Take the records and the machine to your next doctor visit. That
should establish whether you have hypertension or white coat hypertension.

I once read that even if you have white coat hypertension it is still
bad because it means that you will have a similar elevated blood
pressure response under stress full circumstances. Thus they both
should be treated.
