Hi,
I started the Lipitor run. The Rheumatologist is having me have an EMG
and conduction test. I was taken of the Caduet(lipitor and Narvasc) by
my Cardio and given Sular. I have an appointment the 7th for the test.
Has anyone had an EMG? I think I'm more afraid what they will find
than the test...

Yes, I had one back in 2003, it was performed by the head of the MD
clinic, it was obvious he had performed many before as it went pretty
smoothly. In some cases, I would guess that a tech performs the test
in which case you won't get the results right away. In any case, it's
a little uncomfortable but certainly not painful, or at least, it
shouldn't be. The results were given to me immediately after the test
by the Neurologist who performed it, which is always a blessing. Why
are you having the test performed? I was given one for a feeling of
weakness in my legs and fasciculations, the results were normal.
I am taking the test for weakness in the legs also(what isThank you for you answer, and please let me know what they found and if
fasciculation?) also by a Neurologist. the Rheumotologist mentioned a
muscle disorder. Also having the Nerve Conduction test...

Fasciculations are basically muscle twitching. Muscle twitching can
happen occasionally, due to over exertion or stress but in some cases it
can happen frequently, on a daily basis, this is cause for further
examination. An EMG is used for evaluating physiologic properties of
muscles at rest and while contracting. Muscle twitching and weakness
(whether it's actual weakness or simply fatigue) can be caused be a
variety of different things, to many to mention here. Muscle twitching
in combination with actual weakness can be symptoms of ALS (or Lou
Gehrig's disease.) So when a patient visits a doctor who complains of
weakness and twitching he would most likely do one of two things, order
an EMG himself or refer the patient to a Neurologist who can ultimately
(in some cases) ascertain the problem and provide treatment. ALS is
ultimately fatal, most people live only 3-5 years after diagnosis, some
more, some less. This is why my symptoms were taken so seriously. The
flip side to this is that twitching, weakness and fatigue can also be
caused be a hundred other things, that's what the EMgG is for, it's a
very good diagnostic tool. Symptoms of ALS usually become apparent
relatively quickly, in most cases, the patient loses a significant amount
of muscle (called muscle wasting) before he/she realizes what the hell is
going on. That's what happened to my uncle, he couldn't turn the key to
open the door one day because he was losing muscle rapidly, he now has
ALS.
No, I don't have weakness, I have all the symptoms of fibromyalgia,
another disorder that can cause a feeling of weakness (although it's
actually fatigue) and twitching, and most often, pain. My EMG was
negative because my muscles were not weak, my nerves were working
properly but I was simply fatigued all the time, this wouldn't show up on
an EMG.
ALS is a relatively rare disease, the average age of onset is around 56
and the symptoms I mentioned above are atypical, I was also 32 at the
time so it would have been unusual but my doctor was concerned, hell, so
was I.
As I said, there are a lot of different things that can cause your
symptoms, ALS being highly unlikely, spinal problems can often times
cause leg weakness and are much more common than ALS. I am not an MD but
again, there are probably at least 40 different conditions that can cause
what you're experiencing, so don't make things worse by guessing. You
mentioned Lipitor, could be a side effect of that or any other statin
you've been on, didn't catch the Lipitor thread.
The above mentioned is my story but it has nothing to do with you, I
would have the test done and simply try to get the results back as
quickly as possible. If it's an actual doctor performing the tests, ask
questions after it's over. If it's a tech, warm up to them a bit and ask
questions anyway, they're smarter than you think.

Thank you so much. My MD had me see a Rheumatologist (after he put me on
prednisone for so long and it wasn't helping, just got worse) and the
Rheumatologist is sending me to a Neurologist for the test. I go next Wed.
I' m also having a nerve Conduction test..I don't have twitching, but I do
shake when I get in a hurry or under stress, but it goes away when I
relax.

I thought you said you had weakness in your legs? Did it just go away? I
have lost muscle mass in my legs and arms but that was after I started
taking the prednisone and was told caused that..the skin so so thin now
that I bruise easily.
I wish now I was going tomorrow to get it over with, and get the out
come..I've read so many things on the PC that scare me...

Well, I'll try to explain it as simply as possible, I had a feeling of
weakness in my legs. That is, whenever I would go up the stairs, my legs
would feel weak, they would fatigue easily, it's very difficult for an
individual to ascertain the difference betweeen actual mild weakness and
fatigue. My leg problem (which was accute at that time) was most likely
caused by my back, I have bulging discs and it's very possible that it was
nerve related, or it could have been the first symptoms of Fibromyalgia. I
still have these issues but they have never been as severe as they were just
before I had the EMG. I didn't know about the back problems until I had a
Lumbar MRI done two years ago.
