No, it wasn't. A relative risk of 1.01 with a CI of 0.89-1.15 is not a
slight increase in mortality risk and you don't get to claim it as such,
any more than I can pretend that the RR of 0.99 in the Cochrane
meta-analysis was a slight decrease in mortality.

You are correct . In this study atenolol v placebo moratality was
unchanged ; but there are anaysis that indicate atenolol increases
mortality rates when compared to other active treatments. Let me ask
again

At best this drug has little value and less evidence to support its
use in the control hypertension. Studies have linked it to an
increased risk of diabetes. It has unpleasant and sometimes serious
side effects. It provides very little [ if any ] benefit to the
patient . In every comparison trail it loses. Doctors her still
widely
prescibe it. Why?

Thanks Vince

No, the studies don't indicate that atenolol "increases mortality"
compared to other active treatments. The studies indicate that atenolol
does not decrease mortality as much as those other treatments.

The studies show that
A. Atenelol has no effect on mortality. Here I think we agree . So it
does not reduce mortality at all. I think you phasing on this creates
the impression that atenolol decreases mortality rates it does not

B.Other drugs ARBS Ace inhibitors ect may reduce mortality rates .

The statement atenolol increases mortality rates as compared to other
classes of drugs is true.

Again why is it still widely used at least in the US in the UK steps
have been taken to assure it is no better than the 5th option.

Thanks Vince
