Re: Diabetes Control A Must Before Heart Surgery

It seems to me I heard somewhere that Andrew B. Chung, MD/PhD wrote in

I guess the moral is... if you educate a thief, you simply increase
his capacity to steal. Always remember to carry dog biscuits.

The best-trained guard dogs refuse to eat while on-duty knowing that
their hunger keeps them physically more able. Similarly guide dogs for
the blind will refuse to eat while wearing their harnesses on duty.

The best-trained guide dogs do not refuse to eat but are not *allowed*
to eat while on duty. I assume the same is true for guard dogs under
the control of a handler; guard dogs left on duty in premises overnight
(e.g., junkyard dogs) surely eat if food is available.

In each case, it is a matter of training and human control, not some
innate instinct or superior wisdom that keeps them from eating.

"A Guide Dog should never be offered food or other distracting treats.
The dogs are fed on a schedule and follow a specific diet in order to
keep them in optimum condition. Even slight deviations from their
routine can disrupt their regular eating and relieving schedules and
seriously inconvenience their handlers. Guide Dogs are trained to resist
offers of food so they will be able to visit restaurants without
begging. Feeding treats to a Guide Dog weakens this training."

Humans, who falsely believe that hunger is bad, have the irrational
compulsion to eat all the time to keep from being hungry even when
this overeating compromises their work.

Maybe it's about time you documented this "irrational compulsion" and
false belief that only you seem to be aware of. Where's the proof?
