I didn't go to Stanford but my father was a law professor there and
for some reason they started sending me e-mails. Sometimes they have
interesting stories about research going on at Stanford. This article
I thought was interesting because people who are overweight are so
often thought of as being at fault for their condition, based on the
idea that they are lacking in willpower. I think that idea is wrong-
headed, derogatory and just not particularly helpful.

As a Cushing's patient maintaining my healthy weight only by eating very low carb AND low calorie, I know how untrue it is. So many CD patients gain 100 lbs in a matter of months while feeling too ill to eat. In my case, the only way to lose was to have an Addisonian crisis over a year ago that made me feel like throwing up all the time. On high carb, low fat, I maintained slight overweight on 800 cals per day while exercising a lot. On low carb, I maintain on 50% more calories whether I exercise or not.

Biology drives obesity, not character. I'd argue that unhealthy behaviors are driven by hormones, not the other way around, but then there's a constant feedback loop maintaining the behavior.

Thanks.
