For the same reason s/he should discuss quitting cigarettes. Most folks fail many times before they successfully quit, too.

But some diets don't require such severe caloric restriction, only low fat ones do. Folks on low carb lose much more weight on about 50% more calories, for example.

The other issue is that caloric restriction is much easier to maintain given the appetite reduction of low carb.

Smoking and alcoholism are addictions. If overweight or obese people
were addicted to food, I could see the analogy. However, most are
not.

Obese people are driven to eat by their hormones, the same way drug or alcohol addicts are driven by their neurochemistry.


This does not seem like a good analogy to me. Wearing a seat belt or
putting on a helmet is a simple thing to do. Losing weight and
keeping it off is not.

This is very true. If weight loss were easy, we'd all be healthy weights all the time.
