Re: blood pressure pill nightmare

I'm 52 and have a similar experience. Only difference is my primary
care physician happens to be one of the local areas top kidney
doctors. He is extremely familiar with hypertension and treatment
because of the damage that can be done to the kidneys. I presented
with 150/90 on my last visit about 2 months ago. Since my BP has been
slowly rising over the last few years he recommended treatment. He
prescribed diet, exercise and hydrochlorothiazide. I was to come back
in 1 month and get rechecked. I started exercising and dieting and
lost 10 lbs in 1 month. In the meantime I also started the Maxzide
(hydrochlorothiazide). My doctor explained to me that most patients
need to take 2 or more medications to control blood pressure. I came
back and my blood pressure was still elavated so he also prescribed a
beta blocker. I've been taking both the water pill and the beta
blocker for a few weeks now and I'm going back in this week to get
checked again. I also asked about a low-dose aspirin regiment. There
are advantages and disadvantages and depending on your age, physical
condition, etc., it may be recommended or not. In my case he did not
recommend it. Before you start or stop taking any medication ASK YOUR
DOCTOR. Do not attempt to modify your medication because you do not
have the knowledge and experience that your doctor has. Aspirin is
not a benign drug and every drug has side effects and interactions.
As to your comment about you reading everywhere that
hydrochlorothiazide is harmless - it is not harmless. No drug is 100%
harmless. There are side effects, precautions, interactions that you
need to be aware of.
