My wife bills out crowns in a dental lab and there is seldom more than
$50.00 difference, usually far less. (She also has an incurable lung disease
from breathing base metal dust so please understand that I am not neutral on
this subject)
There can be a difference in how your body reacts to base metal,
particularly your gums where they contact the metal. Gold is very
biocompatible, other metals are generally less so (Titanium excepted).
The proper question to ask of dentists is: "If you were making a crown for
yourself or a member of your family, would you order base metal"?
