Sanitation workers attacked by family
By Ira Porter
INQUIRER STAFF WRITER
A South Philadelphia family of four who had neglected to put out their
trash in time for morning pickup today beat two sanitation workers
after they refused to back up their truck to collect the late refuse,
police said.
The dispute, in the 1900 block of Watkins Street, occurred shortly
after 11:30 a.m.
The family, police said, insisted that the sanitation workers back up
their truck to collect the late trash, which they are not allowed to
do.
The workers offered to take the trash if the family brought it to the
truck, police said, and that's when the fighting started.
Police said the mother, Latonia Dykes, 37, hit both of the workers,
and her two sons, Norman Cutright, 22, and Eugene Dykes Jr., 18, beat
one of the workers, blacking both of his eyes. The woman's husband,
Eugene Dykes, 37, fought the other worker, police said.
Both sanitation workers were treated at Graduate Hospital. One was
checked for a concussion while the other suffered a split lip.
Police did not release the workers' names.
The family remained in police custody last night on aggravated-assault
charges and related offenses.
