Retired Dentists Could be Asked Ease Crisis
8 Mar, 2005, 10:31

According to an ITV Border survey carried out in November - if you
live in this region you have the smallest chance of having a dentist
on the NHS than anywhere in Britain. It's a crisis which hasn't eased
since then. Over a hundred dental practices in Cumbria or Southern
Scotland do not take on new NHS patients. Those who do now have up to
four thousand patients - double what's expected. In the last two
months many dentists have decided to offer a private-only service. It
means many patients can't get treatment. The shortage of dentists is
now so bad that some retired professionals may soon be carrying out
work to take the strain. Health officials in Dumfries and Galloway
have today responded by drawing up a plan to solve the situation. It
includes a raft of measures to help dentists take on more NHS patients
and resolve a crisis which is showing no signs of easing
