Good observation. The same thing happens with the tooth ........ that is
except where the post itself causes the root to split.
A conical root tapers as it proceeds apically (towards the apex or tip).
Its thinner there as Steve Mancuso alludes to, and its weakened by the lack
of nutrients within the odontoblasts .......
