Gotta vote on the side of dentists not fostering or creating the "Standard
of Care" concept. Been to court a few times myself (so far only as a prof.
witness, phew) and my understanding is that we have "parameters of care".
"Standard" tends to be too precise. For example, the "ADA Dental Practice
Parameter for Partially Edentulous Arch(es)" states: "Tooth, implant and/or
tissue supported prosthetic options should be considered by the dentist in
developing a treatment plan." Guidelines, not specifications. Nowhere
does it state "Don't make any Nesbitts".
Mind you, I would not make one myself.
An illustration of why it's difficult to employ "standards" would be that,
if you let the stuffy old Prosthodontists establish precise technical
guidelines, every denture with non-balanced occlusion would be
"substandard". Ridiculous, you ask me.
