Re: dentalcom.net - smd gateway

Ok everybody,

This gateway was originally my idea and from what I gather from several
posts, poignantly I fell at fault. The gateway was never intended to act
as an interloper onto SMD. Its purpose was to establish a connection to
newsfeeds like SMD for those who couldnâ??t access public newsgroups
like SMD because of different mitigating factors (like their ISPâ??s
unwillingness to provide newsfeeds or simply a lack of expertise on
setting up OE). Since DentalCom is principally a dental related site,
SMD was an obvious choice.

It was never my intent to trespass onto what I assumed was a public
newsfeed. I also know Justin, the SysOp of DC (who did all the hard
work) and I know heâ??s very particular about keeping things well under
control on his board.

FWIW, gateways are nothing new. Back in the early 80â??s I was one of
the coordinators of a group called Fido. Back then, users had to log
into BBSâ??s in order to read newsfeeds since there was no Internet
per-se. There were only the hobbyists, universities and Arpanet. The
gateway thatâ??s been established here allows regular HTML users to
access your posts and believe me; this board has lots of readers (many
donâ??t post, but readers nonetheless). This gateway also allows users
to convert the newsfeeds into RSS and read/post from a cell phone or
PDA if they wish. What the heck, I thought it was a good idea.

Carabelli, Dr. Steve, Iâ??m sorry if Iâ??ve caused discourse. It was
never my intent to do so. It was my intent to bring in like minded
individuals, but from what Iâ??ve read, it hasnâ??t turned out that
way.

Iâ??ll be the first to sign off if Iâ??m not welcome here.

Bill
