Hello,
Am I being ripped off?
Three months ago my dentist told me that I had to have a crown fitted;
I am in the UK and on NHS.
He told me that it would be gold which I did not want. He told me that
a white one would cost £399 so I agreed.
Following the fitting, for two months I had a severe tooth pain
controlled with pain killers for a week until it settled down.
After three months I then went to have my annual check up. He asked if
I had an X-Ray done recently, No I told him. He then arranged for one
to be done, as I told him the problems I was having.
A week later he told me that the tooth had to be pulled as there was a
disease and the bone was infected which was severe.
Yesterday I went along to have the tooth pulled, when he pulled the
crown, I asked if I could keep it, he said No. I was surprised so asked
him again, he said no again.
He then pulled the tooth; I then asked if I could keep it? he abruptly
said No, I asked why not he then said heath and safety reasons. I asked
if he could not put it into a seal bag. He asked why I wanted it. I told
him so I could show it to my wife. He said No.
The tooth roots looked really healthy and I was concerned.
He then asked me if I wanted an implant and would cost £1,500 I told
him that I could not afford it. I asked where would it fit to, as he
told me that the bone had decayed?. He said that the bone would grow
back in six months.
1) Should he have taken an X-Ray before suggesting fitting the crown?
2) He said that Gold crowns are free on NHS but white ones cost. Is
this true?
3) As I paid for the Crown when he pulled it is it my property? Can he
refuse giving it to me?
4) He pulled my tooth is it still mine once pulled and can he refuse
giving it to me.
5) Am I entitled to my money back for the crown as he did not X-Ray
before fitting it.?
He is now fitting a bridge, any help or advice is appreciated.

Jerry, you need better communication skills with your dentist.
"He is STILL your dentist right?"

I agree with Joel, you need to communicate these questions with your
dentist.
Sorry, I am in the States so I am not familiar with NHS and the
regulations or fees charged in the UK.
