Wearing a Retainer after a long time

So, I haven't worn my retainer in 3 years since I got my braces off, I
basically stopped wearing it after about a year. So its three years
later and I'm now 19, I cleaned them off and popped em back in. They
hurt like hell, but fit. So I wore them for about a week. They hurt a
little less now to wear. Is this bad for my teeth or good? Should I
continue to suffer through it or stop? Any advice, my teeth are pretty
darn straight but not absolute 100% perfect like the day my braces came
off. Thanks for the help all.
