I am wondering from other dentists in the group what is the average
life expanceity of an well placed..
4 surface posterior amalgam

Are you serious? That is a dopey response. Say you don't like amalgam and
won't use it if you feel that way, but to hint an amalgam won't last a year
is misleading and dishonest
In my experience most large amalgams or composites will not last as long as
a crown or onlay, as once a filling reaches a certain size it is incapable
of withstanding the forces of chewing for very long. In other words, a more
conservative filling may indeed last 20 years, but as they get larger, that
lifespan will decrease.
4 surface posetrior composite
20-25y
There may be some miracle workers out there who can place a 4 surface resin
that will last 20-25 years, but I haven't seen many of them! The materials
simply begin to breakdown before that many years have passed.
gold posterior onlay
20-50y
Finally I agree! I had a patient in his late 90's who had a mouth full of
gold that had been placed almost 75 years earlier and looked great.
