Two weeks ago, I had my left lower wisdom tooth extracted. (Bill says, Tooth 17. Extraction-surgical Erupt tooth.)

Although the tooth was straight and not impacted, it was only partially out of the gum and had caused me gum infections every two years or so. So, I told the dentist to take it out. At the time I had it out, I had an infection in the gum.

He said it was a "difficult extraction"; it took over an hour and he had to cut the tooth in half.

I was prescribed clindamycin for 7 days.

Two weeks later, I still have a dull ache in this area and my face is still very slightly swollen. The outside of the gum is painful if I touch it with my finger, but not extremely so. I am having to take ibuprofen, 400mg 2 or 3 times a day.

I am 50yo, so I assume that the healing is much slower than if I were 20. Could it be normal to still have pain two weeks after the extraction given the above facts?

In any case, I am calling the dentist tommorrow to try and get in before the weekend.

Thanks in advance for any help.

A bit unusual, but if the pain and swelling is resolving (even slowly) you're probably in good shape. Good idea to check back with the dentist.

Thank you for your reply.

My dentist just looked at it and said that it was healing fine and there were no signs of infection. He then commented that he remembered that it was a particularly tough extraction and, given that fact, it is not surprising that it is still a little sore.

Thanks for the followup. This is probably most likely to happen in the lower molar area.
