Dentist itemized receipt and claims

I just went to the dentist, and I got a credit card receipt. I did not
get an itemized list of what exactly was charged for what. The front
desk clerk said it was figured if my insurance did not cover the rest I
would get a bill from them? Is it standard practice to give the
patient an itemized list of what was done and the associated cost in
addition to the regular credit receipt? I just want to make sure if
there are any problems with the claim I will have that information.
Thanks for any help.
