There is no reason IMO for the dental office to not give you an itemized bill or copy of the claim on request.
Many of our patients have dental insurance with which we participate and accept assignment (the insurance company pays us) so I wouldn't say it's routine, but it's easy enough to do and I'd do it if requested.
