The old way, doctor would have to wait until insurance company paid,
servicesmay take months then send you a bill, which may take weeks or months get
paid. This means the office has to wait a long time to get paid for
lot ofrendered. Being a finance company is a pain in the neck...requiring a
creditpaperwork and patience, which is why most people that do extend such
ask for interest when doing so.
I understand what you are saying, but in this office, the patient's
portion of the bill not covered by insurance has always been due at the
time of service. Many people in town share my dental plan, so they
know what will be covered before they submit the paperwork. They don't
need to wait and bill me later. I have no problem with that at all.
What he changed was asking for this payment at the time the work is
scheduled, sometimes weeks before the date of service. This seems
unethical to me, and only sounds fair when something needs to be
ordered, like a crown.
I will definitely bring this up with the office manager (the dentist's
wife), and see what she has to say. I was just curious as to how
widespread the practice is, and wanted to get this group's thoughts.
Thanks for all the replies!
I am sorry...I did not read your note carefully! Now that I better
understand what you are saying I can say I never heard of that and I
wouldn't like it either. I would not hesitate to tell them you don't think
this is right. I have never heard of someone demanding payment so far up
front. It is hard to understand why they would implement such a policy as it
would seem to create as many logistical and paperwork headaches as billing
well after the service was completed. If you do confront doctor, let us know
what happens.
