If you want to be sure you do not have any hidden problems in your
mouth, including new decay, bone cancer, chronic infection from
previous dental work, it is advised to get the 18 -20 films vs just
the 4-6 which do not show what is happening at the roots of your back
teeth and which may have overlapped teeth and may be un-diagnostic.
Sounds like you are not comfortable asking your dentist to explain
this to you. To me it seems your dentist is giving you sound advice,
why do you not trust him/her?
Actually I do have a lot of faith in him. Great guy - I refer people to
him when I can.
However that doesn't mean I'll blindly get 20 X-Rays without understanding
if it is worth the radiation exposure.
If he had a digital system, which I believed would provide substantially
less exposure, well I wouldn't be having this discussion.
Thanks :)
