Lowering radiation dose is always something to take seriously. If your
dentist says you need them you should ask him what actions he takes to
reduce your dose. He should tell you things like he uses a rectangular
"filter" on the front of the xray beam (which reduces the dose by half
and by only exposes the xray film and not a bigger area), that he uses
the fastest speed film (E or F), and that he tests his xray beams
regularly.
All in all, they say that a full mouth series of xrays (18-20) should
be nearly the equivalent of a full day at the beach.
Digital xrays are becoming the standard, but a majority of dentists
still use film. Europe is way ahead of us on this one! I hope this
