Lingering pain for more than a few seconds with hot/cold usually
indicates irreversible damage to the nerve and a need for root canal
treatment. It's not very uncommon for this to occur after a deep
filling... sometimes the use of the drill to clean deep tooth decay is
the final insult to the nerve and it starts hurting.
Your dentist should run some pulp vitality tests and decide on the
need for root canal treatment accordingly.
