Chunk of tooth fell out! HELP!

I have a right top molar that has had a root canal and is scheduled for a
crown in Dec. Tonight my gum was sore, like I had a popcorn kernal stuck in
it, so I gently flossed and a very small chunk of tooth came out from between
the teeth. I can feel a small hole but due to it being so far back, I cannot
see where exactly it broke. My question is this: Will I have to have it
pulled? Or can I still get the crown and save the tooth? My gum is kind of
sore too but Im assuming its b/c of the piece of tooth being lodged in there.
The tooth itself doesnt hurt (its dead) but the gum is sore.
