Re: Spur

Hope I can explain this accurately. I can see and feel a sharp "root"
or bone or something protruding about 1/4" above the left upper canine
tooth. It's a small hard "bump" that feels like a bone spur, for lack
of a better word. I've felt all along the upper gum area, as in the
ridge where the roots of the teeth would be, and it's quite bumpy in
spots, but this little thing is much more noticeable. It's a little
sore today, the gum over the bump is whitish from the pressure, not
reddened, not mushy or soft. I'm afraid it's going to puncture through
the gum and if that happens, I don't see how it can heal without
intervention.

Is this a common problem, or at least easily fixed? Will I need to
have that area shaved down or something? I'm probably the worst
dental phobic you'll ever meet in your life, and just thinking about
this is giving me anxiety attacks. Any ideas or suggestions?

I'm guessing it's an exostosis, which is an overgrowth of very normal bone. The cause is unknown, and the only reason you'd need treatment is if they get really big and then lose all your teeth and need dentures--then they can get in the way. Otherwise, this is a common finding that you need not worry about. Here's a pic--do you think I'm right?

(BTW, there are lots of decayed teeth in that picture--THAT is not normal!)
