Shaving down/extraction of the gum in order to place crown?

Hello,

I have a root canal done on this tooth and I also have a post in one
of the roots of the same tooth, but the root was not filled
compleately due to blockage and this post filled the half of the root.
My dentist prepared to do a crown and shaved down the toth...then he
discovered that in one place the tooth was brocked underneath the gum
serface. So, he decided to do a gum extraction/reduction in order to
put the crown deeper on the tooth. T do that he has to shave down the
gum around the tooth and also around the two healthy teeth that are on
the both sides. If you count from the middle of the lower jaw it is
6th on the left side.

I am very afraid to do this proceedure, because it involved reducing
the gum around healthy teeth. I already have one of my molar that has
gum reduced and I have sensitivity to cold etc, so I had to put a
filling around it.

Another alternative is implant, but I really don't want to do it
before I try the crown. I also have a lots of allergies to medications
and I already had an anaphylactic shock a few times in my life.

My question is about this gum operation...how safe it is and all my
worries about destroyng the healthy teeth...
Of course I will go for another opinion, but most of the dentist
unfortunately see our problems as potential money making machine and
give suggestions that will satisfy their needs first. Again, there is
no garantee that proceedure will benefit the patient and it may be too
late to change anything.

I've posted my question on http://www.dentalforum.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2190#2190
but haven't got a reply as yet : (

Please, let me know what do you think.

Thanks
.
