well maybe I'm beginning to get a little more information.

I found a new dentist who does 3 levels of cleaning:
regular, debridement, and Deep cleaning which is
a lot of money.

Now I read about debridement, I reckon that is
what the last dentist (from July 2007) really did, only
he called it a deep cleaning. At the time I figured he
just  wanted more money to do the job right.
Seems I was right.

I'm going to ask the next dentist for the "debridement"
because the last dentist (from last Saturday) didn't
mention anything about any pockets whatsoever.  I
just have a little inflammation on part of the gums, front
and bottom.  That's the only thing they could prove to
me.  So they want to sell me a deep cleaning.

Yu know what, after looking at the little pamphlet
they gave me about gum disease, I would say
it's merely gingivitis at this stage, but I will see
what the next dentist says.

And of course they magivcally added a second
cavity to the estimate, that came out of nowhere.

I really wish doctors would act more like professionals
and not like car mechanics.  Maybe if more of us
question and compare and get second and third
opinions,  medical professionals will behave better.

To those who gave honest and serious answers
on this forum, thank you.

Periodontitis can be considered analogous  to high blood pressure.
Unless you have your own stethoscope and sphygmomanometer you have to
take the word of the clinician doing the monitoring. Like high blood
pressure, most periodontitis is symptom free until it is almost too
far gone for treatment. So you have to be confident in your clinician.
If not, go elsewhere. But if you are hearing the same tune over and
over, you should go along with treatment.

Thank you. It;s a real pain to have to keep shopping around.

And yes , there are many dental charlatans out there. Beware of such
gimmicks as Laser assisted new attachment procedures (LANAP), Arestin,
and Perio-Protect, to name just a few.

Thanks, that's good to know. Well, I don;t have the money
for fancy cosmetic dentistry anyway, I just need some
maintenance.

well, when the dental hygenist was poking around in my gums,
she was telling numbers to another person who was entering them
in the computer. The numbers were all 3 or less. I got home
and read this thread from this group:

http://tinyurl.com/5qm5n6

In which it was stated that "A "normal" sulcus (pocket)
depth is 1-3mm."

Ok so just by paying attention I couod figure out that I don't have
any pockets deeper than 3mm - in fact at 3mm or less
it's not called a pocket, which would explain why they
made no mention of any pockets and instead tried
to sell me on a very expensive cleaning based
on a litle gingivitis! Then, by reading I could learn that
if this is the case, then a deep cleaning is not
needed. I could learn that a deep cleaning is for the
situation like that guy with the 12mm pocket had, and
that if one has several, one should forego giving all that
money to a general dentist anyway, and go straight to
the peiodontist.

Ah, I love the internet. Now when I go to the next dentist
I can look them square in the eye and not let them get
away with toooo much.
