Re: Can This Tooth Be Saved?

Thanks so much to both of you. I just came back from the oral surgeon
and he said that the infection will just come back. The prognosis is
no good so tomorrow morning I'm going to my general dentist to have an
impression made for the flipper which will take 2 weeks to get (they
didn't say anything about an immediate flipper) and I also need a bone
graft. I am choosing IV sedation for this. He said it won't be a quick
extraction and I'd be more comfortable this way. Re; the wisdom tooth,
he's going to look at the copy of the cat scan but for now he said
leave it alone. Right now, I don't even want to think about that...but
he did concur that there's no communication to the outside so it's ok
for now. At this point, I just want 11 out of my mouth because it
feels like it's burning and the abscess is sore and draining, I don't
even care about the aesthetic part, my nerves are shot, having just
had #2 removed....too much for one week. Thanks again, gosh, I'm
telling you before even calling my own mother. You all are the best,
really, and hope you know how much your time and caring means to us on
the other side.

I posted about this a few days ago but I am wondering if any of the
dentists here would try to save this tooth. Number 11, old root canal
and post, periodontal abscess a year ago. Periodontist did gum flap
surgery and inserted membrane, guided tissue regeneration to grow bone
and help the tooth adhere better. I got another abscess on Saturday
and on amoxicillin. My dentist traced it with gutta percha to make
sure it was just the gum. Someone told me that each time this happens,
the bone will erode more and this in general is not healthy for my
immune system and that I should just have it extracted. They could not
find the cause last time, no crack, that's why they didn't extract it.
But it can happen again and again because something is causing this,
whether or not they see a crack, it just sounds like a sick tooth.
What would you suggest if this were your patient? Any last ditch
efforts? I wouldn't be so concerned if it was a back tooth but
cosmetically and just psychologically, this is more upsetting than my
previous extractions. I have a consultation with on oral surgeon this
afternoon who I trust a lot but would like your opinions please. Also,
do you feel any pain at all after they numb it? Thanks.

Oh, if it comes to an extraction, you should feel no pain if you have
adequate anesthesia.  Pressure yes--pain no.  Make sure the surgeon
knows before he/she starts that you will put up your hand if you feel
pain--and the surgeon had better stop!
