I've had a burning gum on the top left for about a week and a half.. ISeems unlikely we'd be much help if the dentist who saw you doesn't
have a few apthous uclers currently, but this doen't seem like an
ulcer. My entire gum for the length of about 5 teeth is inflamed,
burns a bit and I feel a movable cyst, somewhat soft, but in the soft
tissue just outside the gum area and its about half the size of a pea.
I went to see my dentist today and he wants me to try some periodex
[sp]? and come back in a week if its still there. I'm not using any
new toothpaste and I don't have periodontal disease according to the
dentist assistant. Any idea what could cause this? They said it looked
"systemic". I don't have any tooth problems to my knowledge and I
brush often.
know what it is. I think it is doubtful in the extreme that Peridex
will help with the discrete soft-tissue lesion. Any way you could post
a photo?

barely palpable.
I don't know why the bump is there and I found another smaller bump in
the same area. Both are somewhat moveable under the soft tissue.
I'm seeing patches of red, inflamed tissue all over my gums here and
there.
This morning I might have learned why... I have been sleeping with my
mouth open, and my mouth is getting dried out (very!) like where my
tongue is cemented to the side when I wake up :-)
The reason this is happening is because I have a wisdom tooth on the
other side bothering me, The soft tissue is swollen around there where
I can't close my mouth otherwise my upper wisdom tooth starts cutting
into the swollen soft tissue on the bottom.
IS it possible that having a super dry mouth, might cause
inflammation!? I guess that's a long shot. Otherwise, can a wisdom
tooth problem on the bottom cause inflamed gums on the top!?
Ok.. failing that, what sort of systemic illnesses might cause this?
dental issues than the lump in the soft tissue. Were any x-rays taken
of the 5 teeth that are inflamed? Did the dentist use a periodontal
probe to see if you have periodontal pockets (despite what the "dental
assistant" said)? Why has the wisdom tooth on the other side not been
removed? Do you regularly attend dental appointments i.e. cleaning
every 6 months, complete oral and periodontal examination and bite-
wing x-rays every year, full mouth x-rays every 3 years.
The symptoms you describe are truly unusual for a dry mouth. Peridex
is often used by some clinicians when they don't know what else to do..
I think that there is much more that you need to tell us about your
past dental history that would help us advise you. However, x-rays and
periodontal evaluation seem to be in order. If there is nothing there,
then maybe the inflamed soft tissue needs to biopsied to determine if
there is an unusual mucosal disease. However, more often, there is
just plain old neglected untreated periodontal disease or caries.- Hide quoted text -

ago. Crowns on all front 16, lots of fillings in the back. No carries,
I brush 4 times daily, rinse, I get cleaned every 6 months, etc. No
tooth aches anywhere.
I was expecting an xray or probe by the dentist but he didn't choose
to do either one.
The first impression by the assistant was that I burned my gums with
coffee, which I did not. There are just patches here and there that
look pink-red, mostly where the apthous ulcers are. The redness is
going away today but those two small pesky bumps persist and a little
feeling of burning. They are in the soft tissue right under the skin,
small things that I can move around.
OK then. Lots of crowns = lots of possible root canal problems, even
periodontal problems associated with the crowns (they are a 2 edged
sword). An endodontist once told me that crowns were the biggest
factor in keeping him busy. The GD should go there first, then rule
out root canal problems and periodontal abscesses. Current, up-to-date
X-rays are essential for a proper diagnosis. Ask anyone who practices
dentistry.
Agree. X-ray and probing would be pretty much automatic based on
patient's description.

Just went to an endodontist who probed (depth was 2 or 3) and took a
couple x-rays. No abscesses but those two little movable (not bony)
bumps are still there. He said they could be fatty deposits or
something and that they are common. I just never felt them before and
with the burning on that gum, I thought it was an abscess. I don't
understand why I have burning on the gum. I do have apthous ulcers
elsewhere in my mouth, so I wonder if it’s from some kind of
inflammation going on.
