What this proves is that oncologists are not trying to hide anything. They
freely advertise where results are bad, so that those with other axes to
grind can seize upon it.

The fact is that about fifty per cent of all cancers (excluding easily cured
skin cancers) are cured permanently. Medicine has never thought to
advertise this enough. It has been busy trying to improve treatments, not
justify itself in the face of sly propaganda.

The cured cancers are mainly primary (localised) cancers that never
metastasise or are treated before they have a chance to. To these can be
added some kinds of generalised cancers such as lymphomata, leukemias, and
a few specific types of metastatic cancer such as testis, and childhood
cancers. The author of this piece is gracious enough to admit a "few per
cent" of cures in these but chooses to ignore totally the very high
permanent cure rates from surgery alone in bowel cancer, early breast
cancer, cervical cancer etc.

If you are a cancer patient and have a primary (localized) cancer, with no
overt evidence of metastases (spread), you should think very carefully
before relying on methods that have never been able to produce any
significant body of cured patients. I agree decisions can be difficult
when conventional treatment is disfiguring or disabling, but don't let
wishful thinking sway you, if what you want is the best chance of
surviving.

Even if such a primary cancer should later prove to have undetectably
metastasised (i.e. it was one of the "other" fifty per cent all along) you
may be denying yourself useful palliation if you choose to retain the
primary cancer. Progressive local cancer of any kind is absolutely no fun,
and the longer you leave it the more difficult it is to eliminate. Most
patients choosing to use "alternative" understand this, even if those
writing long screeds like this in support of dubious "alternative" methods
don't.

If, on the other hand, you want to use "alternatives" as an adjunct to
conventional measures or as a true alternative when they offer you little
hope (including with those cancers that rarely respond very well to
chemotherapy), that is a very different matter. That is supported by, or
at least not opposed, by most oncologists nowadays.

If you do seek "alternative" care, and have any kind of active cancer, may
I suggest that you put the screws on those offering you treatment, just as
this piece has tried to put the screws on conventional medicine?

Insist upon your informed consent rights. Ask them "how many patients like
me have you treated and what happened to them? Can I talk to someone you
have cured with this specific type and stage of cancer, and have their
doctor confirm the facts?" Don't swallow self-serving "patient privacy"
nonsense. Cured cancer patients are only too willing to cooperate in such,
and the promoters of such treatments would be eager to display such patients
if they had them..
