Stem Cells are the Source of Cancer

Comments? I thought it was an interesting idea that may
spark something, or it may be a really old idea and
long since discredited. FWIW: I couldn't google it.

STEM CELLS ARE THE SOURCE OF CANCER

Nicholas O. Lindan
August 23, 2005
Hypothesis:

o Radiation and toxic chemicals cause mutations in the DNA of
stem cells, even though they are safely protected within the
marrow of the large bones;

o Some percentage of mutated bone marrow stem cells are not
repaired or destroyed;

o Mutated stem cells produce more mutated stem cells;

o The produced mutated stem cells are released into the blood
stream;

o They migrate to organs and there morph into the form of the
organ's own cells as a repair mechanism; Normally, it may be:
- Stem cells deliver fresh DNA to injured
sites; This may be a prime purpose;
- All repair cells are generated by stem cells
as they can divide quickly without worry of genetic
defects;

o The repair cells produced by the replication of the
originating stem cell(s) all carry the original's mutation.

o The mutation is such that the mechanism for continuous
replication, already present and turned on, is never silenced;

o A mass of the repair cells forms and is recognized as cancer;

o The cancer is a chimera of the original mutated stem cell and
the organ's own (possibly damaged) cells;

Arguments

o All cancer is the same as it all originates with stem cells;

o All cancer is different as it always mimics the host organ;

o Stem Cell Initiated Cancer (SCIC[?]) is well suited to
metastasize:
- The originating organ's cancer cells may have original stem
cells' ability to mimic neighboring cells. Example:
Cancerous liver cells turn into cancerous colon cells.
- Cancer cells have the mechanisms and 'desire' to
break free of the host body, float in the blood
stream and attach themselves to -any- damaged tissue.
- The newly attached cell morphs into its new host organ
cell-form and continues replicating, forming a new
tumor.

o The normal stem cell system mimics or is cancer; Stem cells are
designed to:
- Replicate as long as the host is alive: live forever;
- Concentrate at the site of injury and grow a mass of new
tissue;
- Grow quickly;
- Metastasize;

o It may be a disease of proteins, as in CJD/Alzheimer's.
A cellular protein is missing or damaged.
