the situation.
I think the problem with Alex is that she doesn't understand the concept
of advanced cancer (and perhaps other advanced disease states)
Alex, there comes a time in all diseases including parkinsons, als, mnd,
ms,organ failure and diabetes when further curative or life extending
treatments cause more problems than they solve. When this time comes it is
wise to seek treatments that maintain quality and cease those treatments
that interfere with this. This perspective may even extend a life that
'curative' treatments may cut short. This is particularly so where
chemotherapy may cause enough damage to the bone marrow to prevent
adequate blood cell production.
Of course there are always going to be people who will want treatment "at
all costs" and there are always going to be doctors who will give it to
them....

Mike,
I think you are showing your ignorance. Not every one dies of cancer. End
stage renal disease for example, going on dialysis people are to
diaylsis, the side effects are diaylsis can be similar to chemo, nausea,
vomiting and letheragy. And many of this patients have frequent
hosptialization for sepsis due to their contiminated venous access.
End stage COPD people can't live with 02, where going to the bathroom is a
taking effort. Brochondilators and O2 have culmative effects which are
cardiac and neurological.
Let's not forget about quads. They can't live without medical intervention
and prognosis is not great should they be told to give up?
You are not sure JW has bone marrow suppression ( unless you have done a
complete medical review and done a clinical exam) yet you are quick to say
it is time to give up treatment. Futhermore, you present yourself here as
a RN, I was aware that nurses in Austraila where allowed to diagnosis
patients? And not only diagnosis but advise them over the internet.
Is the population over treated? My opinion is yes, that doesn't give me the
right to determine when enough is enough. I dare you to say a similar
statement on another disease web page. Cancer patient should be treat
similar to people with other terminal diseases
People are eligible for hospice ( in the US) with any terminal disease....
yet terminal patients are subjected to feeling guilty for opting for
treatment.
