A Manitoba woman fighting advanced colon cancer has claimed a
legal-medical victory in her battle with the provincial government.
"We were quite excited and quite quite happy about that," Darlene
Kjartanson said Thursday.
The Manitoba Health Appeal Board unanimously ruled this week that the
province must pay for cancer treatment Kjartanson sought in Arizona.
Manitoba Health refused to pay for Erbitux because it was not approved for
use in the province.
Kjartanson paid $120,000 US, but it's likely she will receive only a
portion back. The government reimburses patients based on rates charged in
this province.
Manitoba health officials said Thursday they are reviewing the ruling.
They said they have never challenged an appeal board's ruling.
When politics leans on medical judgement, everyone loses.
