Yes, you're right. Aside from my humor, the resource is limited.
The tests they did with rats in a cage with limited food showed what
happens. At the point where rats get too numerous to be supported by
available food, fights break out and deaths occur, and continue that
way, holding the population down to the maximum manageable number. If
things go on that way long enough, the birth rate is affected.
With people it's more complex. Looking at cities that push
millions of people very close with limited resources in a small area,
you will sometimes get a very strict set of rules in how to act with
each other and with the resources to make them last as far as they can
go. When the limit is reached, people leave or die.
