Infrared Heat Lamps and Skin Cancer

My wife loved to tan but can't anymore (general risk plus additional
risk from drugs she is on for RA). It occurred to me she would enjoy
sitting under an infrared heat lamp for a few minutes from time to
time. She liked tanning itself but talks all the time about the
therapeutic value of the warmth and light.
My understanding is IR rays are harmless, but is there any indication
otherwise? Would this be a safe (though tanless) alternative to a
tanning bed?
Thanks for the help!
