I was dx'd with stage 3 squamous cell carcinoma 3 years ago, had a
vulvectomy and removal of groin lymph nodes [right side only] a month
later [no spread to the nodes] This was back in 2004.
I have to have some tests done on my bladder, I either have
interstitial cystitis or it could be cancer of the bladder.
What's the likelihood that it could be a second bout with my primary
cancer?
You don't say what symptoms you have, I assume an ultrasound/ CT / MRI
showed a thickening of the bladder wall. Of course it could be bladder
cancer, but its more likely to be cystitis. Did you receive any adjuvant
therapy after the operation (radiation or chemo)?
Its highly unlikely to be the vulvar cancer.

My symptoms are severe bladder/pelvic pain that radiates into the left
quadrant [kidney area] and across the lower back. It comes and goes,
seems worse when I want to lay down to sleep. A feeling of having to
pee more often than usual, not quite emptying my bladder and sometimes
having to 'mentally' tell my bladder it needs to be emptied. Pain
wakes me up throughout the night so I am not sleeping well.
Had urine test and vaginal swab for infection. NO infection
Have an appointment coming up with OB/GYN who specializes in urinary/
bladder issues.
I think that once you have had cancer, it is never far from your mind
and it's natural for me to question if it may have spread [I forgot to
mention in my first post that the vulvar lesion had spread to my anus,
that is what worried me most]
Thanks for your reply

So I repeat my question.. Was no adjuvant therapy done after the
operation? If NOT (I assumed it was, seeing the vulvar cancer was at
an advanced stage) then a recurrence of some kind, be it local or nodes,
or even bone mets IS the most likely cause of your pain, unfortunately.
Sounds like hydronephrosis on the left (urine backing up in the left
kidney due to a blockage, possibly at bladder level). Lymph nodes could
be putting pressure on a neural plexus which could explain your bladder
problems too. All speculation until a CT or MRI of your whole abdomen is
done.

It was my understanding that it is difficult to treat this type of
cancer with
chemo and/or radiation because the tissue is very fragile and easily
destroyed.
So they save the BIG GUNS for a recurrence.
I still see my GYN/ONC every 3 months for checkups/tests.
I will keep 'hydronephrosis' in the back of my mind when I have my
next
appointment, thatnks for the info, and I hope it's NOT that!!
