Accused cancer faker draws ire

Convinced her friend was suffering from terminal liver cancer, Anitra
Hotchkiss was moved last year to give Jean Anne Allen more than money.

"I was ready to give up a piece of my liver for her," she said. "I truly
thought she was in need."

Months later, Hotchkiss of Jackson says she is moved to expose Allen's
lies.

"She needs to be seen as the rotten person that she is," Hotchkiss said.

Allen, 36, of Norvell Township was arraigned Thursday in District Court on
a charge of obtaining between $1,000 and $20,000 by false pretenses. She
pleaded not guilty and is out of jail on a $10,000 personal-recognizance
bond. She's slated to appear in court for a preliminary exam May 8.

Allen is accused of faking cancer to collect money and sympathy. Friends
said they began doubting her after they found she had been married to two
men at once, which police and court records confirm.

Before those realizations, community members raised nearly $20,000 -- and
possibly more in undocumented donations -- for Allen's cause, said
Michigan State Police Detective Sgt. Lisa Gee-Cram. The detective could
find no evidence to prove she was ever treated for life-threatening
cancer.

"Of two search warrants I did on medical records, I did not find anything
that indicated she had terminal cancer," Gee-Cram said.
