Hospital receives BUPA kitemark thanks to services for cancer patients
Aug 9 2007

A HOSPITAL has stepped up its services for bowel cancer patients in a bid
to become a BUPA-approved unit.

Dunedin Hospital in Bath Road, Reading, has had to meet and exceed a set
of strict clinical and service standards involving patient information,
the bowel cancer team, diagnosis, surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and
follow-up care.

Bowel cancer is the UK's second-biggest cancer killer after lung cancer,
with predictions of 35,500 being diagnosed with the dis-ease this year and
only half surviving.

BUPA introduced its quality assessments in 2001 to improve cancer centres,
and Dunedin is one of 84 private and NHS hospitals in the country to have
been awarded its quality assurance kitemark.

Dunedin Hospital's business development manager Cate Akhurst said: "This
is a reflection of the ongoing hard work and dedication of all the staff
here at Dunedin, and an indication of our commitment to support patients
and provide them with the best available care."

BUPA sought advice from the charity Beating Bowel Cancer to ensure
patients' needs and concerns were being considered.

The charity's chief executive, Hilary Whittaker, said: "It is important
that the medical profession continues to encourage informed, shared
patient and doctor decision making and open access to treatment choices.

"By stepping up the already high standards it sets for accrediting bowel
cancer hospitals, BUPA is helping to drive excellence in the diagnosis and
treatment of bowel cancer and the provision of after care."
