Hello Laurie,
Have you read this?
<
http://www.bccancer.bc.ca/HPI/CancerManagementGuidelines/Genitourinary/Prostate/HIFU.htm
I think there's only a handful of posters who've had it done (on the prostate
cancer newsgroup).
The most recent post/ man's was done I think last year and he has a recurrence
in a seminal vesical, so he's having it done again. I just lurk there more
than post. Since he describes himself as being married for 53 years, I assume
he's rather elderly (well 78) and thought this procedure might be appropriate
for him, since the chance of dying of something else before this, would be
high. His Gleason was 4+5. He also stated that "Trials were limited to below
Gleason 7 patients."
Someone else was asking about it and someone pointed them to searching PubMed.
(with the words HIFU and prostate) and when I asked how to exclude mice and
rats in the search no one answered me). I was being sarcastic because studies
on rats are kind of useless.
I think I"ve seen some on the prostate cancer newsgroup who tried it after
their initial treatment failed (or they thought it had, failed, due to slight
PSA increases).
In the situation you're inquiring about what is the age of the patient and
PSA?
Have you seen the decision-making discussion here?

You might want to read that and look at Table 1
Stey with us, please. Steph may have a comment for you.
Is it available in your Province?
If you go to the prostate cancer newsgroup, ask specific questions.
Steve K may have a list of people who've tried it. He keeps data on as many
posters as possible.
I would want to know their Gleason, their age, when they had it done, and
whether it has since recurred.
All important, I think, for a younger man with a lot of life yet to live.
J
