Martijn there are many (but not enough) who are informed and who
aren't simply reactionary and jingoistic here.

Too few but there are many.

There needs to be some kind of balance. For all the danger, the era of
the cold war did provide a certain inherent check.

Throughout history there has been a need for a balance of power to
check the unfettered power of any one nation.

The nations of the world need to unite to counterbalance the US. Or
there needs to be a multitude of powers.

I don't agree with "dismantled." Checked yes. Some balance of power as
a counterweight, yes.

But just like Germany didn;t need to be "dismantled" (it is united
again and not a threat) I think the bigger problem is similar to that
of Germany prior to WW II.

It wasn't that ALL the people of Germany were united in their desire
for liebenstraum or aryan purity or world domination. Or that all
Germans of the era were "evil."

The big problem was that good people stood by and did nothing. That
allowed evil to flourish.

I think the William Butler Yeats poem "The Second Coming" has some apt
words to this effect. "The best lack all conviction, while the worst
are filled with passionate intensity":

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
