With all due respect, patients, by definition, are lay people. It is
the professionals we must hold to professional standards-- not
patients. If professionals, enmeshed in their own personal bias, have
created the scaffolding for the current confusion patients endure, it
is the professionals who are primarily responsible, not the patients
who happen to get sick. If belief systems have unduly influenced
scientists responsible for upholding the scientific method (causing
them to trample it, however unwittingly) and if their lapse creates
chaos, it is the professionals --not the poor patients-- who are at
the root. To hold sick patients responsible for the mess created by
professionals is unreasonable --EVEN if patients then respond to the
chaos with chaos of their own. They are SICK patients --we wish they
would be wiser, but we cannot expect it. We CAN expect it from
professionals --demand it, in fact. Actually, Weisman, there's no give
in you, and seemingly, I must say, little compassion. You seem to
paint everyone with the same unwavering brush and that makes YOU the
one who is glib, broad, and lacking in nuance. In contrast to your
contention, I do not see the major patient advocacy group moving
forward with a platform of "conspiracy," but quite the opposite. That
group has distanced itself from conspiracy theorists in every way
possible, one reason it has garnered ire from them. That group is
collaborating with mainstream scientists across a number of major
Universities --whether you know it or not. They have not established
those mainstream collaborations through the craziness you suggest.

You yourself are trying to overcompensate for one stance by an extreme
stance of your own --the picture you paint may be the other side of
the story, but as a one-sided story it is no more accurate than
anything else around here, not by a long shot. We all need watchdogs,
but the watchdogs need watching, as well --I hope you agree. Gregory
