Three-point attack on Lyme Disease unveiled by senator

A park in Hopewell Junction proved symbolic for an announcement from Senator
Charles Schumer, who noted Dutchess County is second in the nation in the
incidence of the tick-borne Lyme Disease. Since 1996, more than one thousand
cases are reported in Dutchess each year.

Schumer said the Lyme Disease epidemic has reached a crisis point in New
York, and called for federal action to protect New Yorkers from the disease.
"When it comes to research of diseases that affect either the whole country
or large parts of the country, it's too much to ask Dutchess County to do
the research, or Columbia County to do the research. You need to do it
nationally," he said. "Getting those federal dollars will make a huge
difference."

Key points of the senator's plan include $10 million in additional funding
for Lyme Disease research and prevention and a new federal tick-borne
disorders advisory committee Targeted educational campaign.

Among those joining Schumer for the announcement were Pat Smith, president
of the Lyme Disease Association, Inc., Jill Auerbach, chair of the Hudson
Valley Lyme Disease Association, and Sarah Hale-Rude, 15, who contracted
Lyme when she was 12, but is now almost fully recovered. "I think there is
hope if you are determined enough and you really seek out knowledgeable
doctors and get the correct medicine," she said.

Sarah's mother, Allison, said one of their big problems was the $20,000
medical bill, with very little of it covered by insurance.
