Greg Gerber.
I'm glad you think so, Greg. I am talking about the efficacy of such a
strategy...actually the lack thereof.
But the issue I'm trying to explore here is whether or not the patient
"advocates", lobbyists...are actually playing straight with their
constituents...
...and, although you may wish to divert the discussion onto the
specifics of the bill itself...I am really only trying to address
TACTICS here...legislative strategy. How you get from point "A" to "B".
BUT...it has been my EXPERIENCE that the lobbyists for proposed
legislation are CONSTANTLY harrsassing and harranguing the staff of the
legislative body/executive..."which way is your guy going to go on
this"?
In other words, they should have known. It's their job to know.
So...I am trying to assess the magnitide of the problem here...is it
utter cluelessness or intentional deception?
I have to say that it looks like it was intentional. Even I managed to
figure out that you were most likely going to get a veto...and I don't
live in NY and was not folllowing it all that closely.
Greg...I SERIOUSLY doubt that mass-mailings are effective at ALL. Why
doesn't someone poll the Guv's staff...see how the campaign was
received?
The advocates have a perfect opportunity to now assess and correct
mistakes.(I may help them with this. Watch this space).
But when they are directed at an executive...over a veto
function...sorry, but you've GOT to be kidding me.
No, these "action alerts"...the direct mail and the calls...those are
for the "homefront" consumption.
And these are sick people who don't need that kind of crap pulled on
them.
Neuro is right...most of the people who responded had no idea what this
bill was about...they just did what they were urged to do and
said,..."UP"..."to the top".
(Ultimately, however,...yeah. I would be inclined to listen to the
trial lawyer's bar on issues like this before a grassroots lobby like
the one here).
There is a well-known and well-worn path in legislation...of when there
is a "blip" or hiatus...to go in and tinker, monkey with otherwise
sound law...because someone did not care for a particular result.
"Throwing the baby out with the bathwater". And the temptation to
meddle should be resisted unless "it's completely broke".
(I recently heard someone use the "baby with the bath water" thing in
regard to Iraq...so that it came out "baby with the Baath
water"...cute, huh?).
So... sorry...but a veto here is probably the safe option for now.
Bring it up next time.
