Phyllis...
First let me apologize for the tone of that last...although I DO mean
it...it wasn't directed specifically at you...and it probably was more
than a bit "over the top".
Understand, however, that I didn't ask you or anyone else to do these
things...I didn't get to vote for you...and although I understand, that
in most cases...the intentions are good and constructive...and it seems
as if anyone who wants to can just grab the ball and run with it and
the rest of us are stuck with the results...
...when I go into the doc's office and mention "Lyme"...I believe the
reaction (squirming in the chair)...is as much the fault of the
"activists" as the "Steere Camp"..if not more so.
If you are going to deal with public policy issues...do NOT expect
gratitude. Expect criticism, Sorry. Rule #1.
I have already said, several times, here, that, based on my
experienece, and belief...legislation is NOT the way to go.
Discussions of options at this point are almost hopeless, however,
because you have too many players on the field...you MUST speak with
ONE voice. This whole act is a mess. Got to get organized.
AND...you want to LIMIT the number of speakers. You do NOT want people
like Lisa Masterson/Marston who thinks every third person is
"McSweegan" represnting you...or even having contact with policymakers.
NO mass-attacks. They only cause resentment...and they backfire.
In my opinion, what you are seing here is the natural consequence of
failing to correctly identify the proiblem...and deal with it at its
source. Instead, the proponents here are trying to deal with the
effects of the Federal policy as they affect the states.
So, to answer your question, I would suggets that you utilize the "good
offices" of Sens. Dodd, Schumer, Liebermann, and Clinton for
constructive BEHIND the scenes discussions with NIH/CDC. AND...please
NYers remember that "the upper Midwest" is involved also...Oregon,
California, too, I know.
As I understand it, there is some sort of "tickborne advisory
committee" that has been, or will be, established. This sort of
thing...if not just for show...could be a step in the right direction.
I am talking about using your political assets to push NIH in the
direction of more skeptical, patient-friendly research...quietly and
without confrontational tactics.
As A starter, I have suggested here that their current BIAS be
demonstrated...so that they atre on the defensive...by asking to get an
explanation of why no American efforts have been expende on the Brorson
research or similar "survival" or persistence lines of research.
It is often said that politics is a game of ADDITION.
What disturbs me greatly in watching the Lyme advocacy mess is that the
tactics are so CONFRONTATIONAL.
Needlessly so, in my opinion. I would suggest that the objective should
be to call a halt to all the mass "activist" protests, etc...they are
counterproductive and...you just do NOT have the numbers.
Thanks for asking.
